I hit a brief, but very thick, midge hatch today on the East River. I saw heads and noses and swirls all over the place. I had a heavy nymph rig on, so I had to totally re-rig with a new leader, tippet, and small dry fly. I caught fish…
I have been fishing a stonefly nymph we call the “Pickle” a lot lately. Officially, it is known as Pat’s Rubber Leg Stonefly Nymph. It is a very productive fly even though it doesn’t look quite as sexy as other stonefly patterns.
This was a really fat rainbow from this afternoon. It was a challenge trying to hold the fish in one hand and the camera in the other. I could barely get my hand around this one. So I just clicked a few off and hoped for the best.
The Gunnison River is fishing really well right now. I fished yesterday afternoon thinking it would warm up, but it never did. I was cracking ice off my guides the entire time. It was cold and overcast, and the fishing was excellent.

I’ve been fishing a typical tandem rig for this time of year for the past couple of weeks now. Here is an underwater shot of a pretty cutbow that took the egg pattern (Trout Bead). A big stonefly nymph (Pickle Fly) has been working well too, along with small midge…
It’s been warming up and the rivers are starting to open up in places, like this section of the Gunnison River up near Almont. We still have a lot of winter left, but it was nice to be able to get out on the Gunnison for a couple of hours…
It was cold, windy, and snowing off and on, but I finally had the river to myself. And I got a couple of nice fish today, including a good brown and nice 22-inch rainbow. So it was worth the trip, even though I couldn’t feel my fingers.
